Patriotic Front (PF) aspiring candidate for the Parliamentary seat for Bweengwa constituency in Monze District was Monday physically attacked by suspected United Party for National Development(UPND) cadres.
And the Ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has appealed to the Zambia Police to provide adequate security for its members as they conduct party activities in Monze District.
In an interview today, Mr Hendrix Chiluma Moobelela explained that he was walking from his home to town on Monday around 10:00 hours and that as he passed through Harry Mwanga Nkhumbula stadium some hordes of suspected UPND cadres pounced on him and started hailing insults at him before physically attacking him.
He said the opposition cadres had earlier asked him to rescind his decision to stand on the PF ticket further accusing him of fanning confusion in Bweengwa constituency before attacking him.
Mr. Moobelela who has since reported the matter to police says he would not cow down to rescind his decision to stand on the PF ticket saying every Zambians had the constitutional right to belong to any political party of his or her own choice.
He said Zambia was a democratic Country adding that no one has powers to stop people from choosing , supporting or belonging to a political party of their choice.
“ I want to state here that no amount of insults, intimidation or physical attacks will ever stop me from standing on the PF ticket in Bweengwa constituency because that is my constitutional right. In this time and era we need to embrace peace and co-existence in our politics and not hurting or killing each other all because of politics,” said Mr. Moobelela.
He urged the UPND top leadership to educate its members on the need to refrain from all forms of violence as it was against the democratic tenets.
He also implored the police to put in place measures to ensure that a peaceful environment was created for all political players adding that the brewing political violence was a recipe for a disastrous general election if no remedial security measures were put in place on time.
And In another walk-in interview, PF Bweengwa Constituency PF chairperson Mr. Mainza Kabwata complained that PF members live in fear as they are under constant verbal and physical attacks from alleged UPND cadres in Monze District.
He said the ruling party has always preached messages of love, peace and co-existence but that the UPND has continued with its harassment, insult and even attack PF cadres with impunity.
Mr Kabwata echoed the urgent need for the police to step up security as the country gears towards campaigns to avoid any loss of lives.
