Eleven trucks and two vehicles laden with maize and meali-meal, suspected to have been ear-marked for smuggling, have been intercepted in Chipata.
And a total of 30 trucks containing 722,000 bags of maize have been impounded from September 11th to October 5th 2020 in Eastern Province.
Zambia National Services, ZNS officers intercepted the trucks over the weekend, in separate incidences on the Mugubudu, Mwami and Chadiza roads.
ZNS Eastern Province Land Development Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Kahembi says the trucks were containing over 2,000 by 50 kilogram bags of maize and about 600 by 25 kilogram bags of meali-meal.
He says this is the first time the officers are impounding meali-meal from the time they started operations, stating that smugglers have started taking the commodity to the neighboring country.
Colonel Kahembi has noted that the truck drivers are now hiding their trucks in villages, waiting for right time for them to move.
He says looking at the number of trucks that have been impounded, it is an indication that the number of smuggling activities is still increasing in the province.
And Colonel Kahembi has rubbished claims by some members of the public that some officers involved in the operations are corrupt.
He challenged those with evidence to present their claims, saying some people are not happy with the operations.
