Disagreements have arisen among stakeholders over the Constitutional Court ruling in 2017 allowing prisoners to vote in Zambia in future elections.
Some political parties yesterday boycotted a stakeholder consultative meeting convened by the Electoral Commission of Zambia to discuss prisoners’ eligibility to vote in the 2021 polls citing lack of consensus in the process.
UPND Chairperson for elections Garry Nkombo says his party is suspicious with the process citing some recommendations where political parties will not be allowed to campaign in Correctional Facilities.
And Socialist Party Spokesperson Rehoboth Kafwabulula has urged the ECZ to bring forward the findings and report on the voting of prisoners to allow stakeholders input on the document.
And GEARS Initiative Zambia Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi has advised the ECZ to take its time before implementing the process by piloting it in by elections.
